Hobart

The bustling metropolitan city of Hobart is the capital of the island-state of Tasmania. Situated along the estuary of the River Derwent, the city is located at the south-eastern shores of the island. Established in 1804, it is the second oldest capital city in Australia. Initially known as Hobart Town (or Hobarton), it was named after Lord Robert Hobart, Fourth Earl of Buckinghamshire (British Tory politician in the late 18th- and early 19th-century and former member of the Privy Council of the United Kingdom). With its estimated population of 212,019 over a total land area of 1,357.3 square kilometres, it has a population density of 895 people per square kilometre.

Initially founded as a town, Hobart became a city on August 21, 1842. Today, the city is considered the administrative and financial heart of Tasmania, and part of the Federal Division (in the Australian House of Representatives) and the State District (in the Tasmanian House of Assembly) of Denison and Franklin. Because of its financial and geographic position, it strategically serves as the home port for the Australian and French operations in the continent of Antarctica. In 2010, the Australian Conservation Foundation named Hobart as Australia's sixth most sustainable city.

Hobart's locals and visitors will always find something of interest within the metropolis, much thanks to the city's numerous recreational facilities and locales:

Thanks to Hobart's commitment to providing facilities for sporting enthusiasts, athletes of various levels of activity and skill can take their pick from a selection of grounds in the city. Some of the most notable samples include Clare Street Oval, Cornelian Bay 2-5, Creek Road Netball Centre, Domain Athletic Centre, Domain Crossroads West, Domain Tennis Centre, Hockey Tasmania, John Turnbull Oval, Lower Queenborough Oval, Mount Nelson Oval, New Town Oval, Parliament Street Oval, Queens Walk Oval, Soldiers Memorial Oval, South Hobart Oval, TCA Ground, West Hobart Oval, and Hockey Tasmania.

Lovers of nature or green open spaces can enjoy the refreshing ambience of some of Hobart's renowned gardens, parks, and walks. Some of the more highly recommended locales are Bicentennial Park, Caldew Park, Cascade Gardens, Cornelian Bay, Cultural Park, Fitzroy Gardens, Hobart Rivulet Linear Park, Knocklofty Reserve, Lambert Park, Long Beach and Nutgrove, New Town Rivulet Linear Park, Princes Park, Ridgeway Park, Saint Andrews Park, Saint David's Park, Salamanca Lawns, Skate Park, Soundy Park, University Rose Gardens, Waterworks Reserve, and Wellington Park.

A particularly interesting venue for various pool recreational activities, as well as for rest and relaxation, is The Hobart Aquatic Centre. This facility maintains a sub-tropical indoor climate allows its visitors to "enjoy summer" all year round.
